Verify who can recommend you

Check the number, role, and submission method required by each institution. An academic reference and a professional recommendation serve different purposes. Do not substitute a prestigious name for someone able to discuss your work when the instructions require relevant evidence.

Ask thoughtfully

Explain what you are applying for, why you are asking, and the verified submission date. Offer a concise summary of relevant work and goals. Ask whether the person can provide a recommendation rather than assuming they will accept. Give them space to decline.

Respect the submission process

Use the official process for invitations and follow-up. Do not write a confidential reference and present it as someone else’s work. Track whether an invitation was sent and whether the institution reports receipt without pressuring the recommender to share confidential content.
